Every year, Americans gather near parks and lakes to celebrate the nation’s birthday with extravagant displays of fireworks and patriotism.
Kaboom Town in Addison is one of the Dallas area’s biggest shows, drawing thousands of families and a number of sponsors and businesses cashing in on the crowds.
About 20 companies sponsor the Addison event, including Budweiser, State Farm Insurance and Coca-Cola. Kaboom Town is an evening-long celebration leading up a firework show, featuring performances from the 36th Infantry Division Band and the Dallas Wind Symphony and an air show from the Addison Airport.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported $369.4 million in retail firework sales in 2012. H&R Block found that a 15-minute show costs around $500 to $1,000.
The Town of Addison spent $52,000 on fireworks for Friday night’s 30-minute production, said Orlando Campos, Director of Economic Development for the Town of Addison.
Roughly 500,000 people are expected to come into the vicinity for the show, with the majority of the audience viewing from watch parties at businesses surrounding the event’s location at Addison Circle Park.
Addison has more than 170 restaurants in the city, and Campos said those closest to the action could see a 200 percent increase in revenue the day of the event.
Traffic is diverted onto toll roads after the event, but the city picks up the tab. Last year, Campos said the Town of Addison spent $9,000 on toll fees.
The overall economic impact on the city ranges from $2.5 to $5 million, Campos said.
“Given that this year’s event falls on a Friday, I think we’ll be closer to that $5 million mark,” Campos said.
VizSense, a new social video analytics tool, is hosting its company launch party across the street from Addison Circle Park. Founder Jon Iadonisi thought celebrating the birth of the company alongside the birth of U.S. would be a good opportunity to introduce VizSense in the community.
“Companies today, like fireworks, are starting with a bang,” he said.
VizSense tracks online videos and helps clients achieve viral success. The team is planning to analyze videos of Kaboom Town to determine key influencers in the Addison community.
